International Portfolio Finance from Nedbank Private

Building wealth often means investing across different countries, currencies and asset classes. While this diversification can strengthen a portfolio, it can also leave substantial value tied up in long-term investments when attractive opportunities arise.

International Portfolio Finance from Nedbank Private Wealth offers a way to access liquidity without having to sell investments, helping you maintain your long-term wealth strategy while meeting immediate funding needs.

Why use portfolio finance?

Selling investments is not always the most effective way to raise capital. Market conditions may be unfavourable, investment growth could be interrupted, and disposing of assets may have tax implications.

Portfolio finance provides an alternative by allowing eligible investors to borrow against the value of their investment portfolio. This can create liquidity for a range of approved purposes, including:

  • Investing in new opportunities
  • Wealth and estate planning
  • Property-related funding requirements
  • Business ventures
  • Family support and succession planning
  • Other agreed liquidity needs

By borrowing against your portfolio, you can potentially access capital while remaining invested in the market.

How International Portfolio Finance works

Eligible clients can apply for portfolio lending facilities from £100,000 or the equivalent amount in another supported currency.

Qualifying assets typically include:

  • Publicly listed securities traded on recognised stock exchanges
  • Daily-dealing collective investment funds
  • Cash holdings

Pension portfolios are not eligible for this facility.

Key features and borrowing limits

The facility can be structured in two ways:

Equity release - Clients may be able to borrow up to 50% of the current market value of their portfolio, subject to approval and verification of the intended use of funds.

Portfolio reinvestment - Where borrowing is intended to increase an existing investment position, clients may be able to borrow up to 100% of the lower of the initial investment amount or the current portfolio value, with proceeds reinvested into the portfolio.

Additional features include:

  • Maximum facility size of £5 million or currency equivalent
  • Available in British pounds, euros and US dollars
  • Interest-only or capital-and-interest repayment options
  • Standard three-year term, with terms of up to 20 years available
  • No early settlement penalties
  • Arrangement fee of 1% of the facility amount
  • Renewal fee of 0.25% of the facility amount.
  • Interest rate is linked to the Bank of England Base Rate, or the currency equivalent, plus a client-specific margin of approximately 1.75% per month

Benefits of borrowing against your portfolio

International Portfolio Finance can help investors:

  • Access liquidity without selling assets
  • Preserve long-term investment strategies
  • Maintain exposure to potential market growth
  • Create funding flexibility across multiple currencies
  • Finance new opportunities while keeping existing investments invested

For many affluent investors, this can be an effective way to put an international investment portfolio to work beyond capital appreciation alone.

Important risks to consider

As with any investment-backed lending solution, there are risks that should be carefully considered.

The value of investments can rise and fall, and clients must maintain agreed loan-to-value requirements throughout the life of the facility. Nedbank Private Wealth will hold a first charge over the portfolio, and material changes to the investment mandate require prior approval.

Every application is assessed individually and remains subject to eligibility requirements, credit approval, supporting documentation, and the applicable terms and conditions.
